Never used it before. This’ll be neat. And fully synthetic no less. Normally I’ve used conventional, but in the name of prolonged turbo life, this’ll be neat.

I’ve been using synthetic Mobile 1 in my car, no problems with the engine so far.

Always nice to be at the point where you’re putting oil in it, close to back-on-the-road!

That 15w-50 is not a weight you see often, is that what it calls for or is it what most people run?

I run Mobil 1 full synthetic in my Camry and in the past my Corolla and I haven’t had problems.

As far as I’ve seen, Mobil 1 is the only one who offers it in stores. The service manual calls for 20w-50 (assuming conventional because I’ve never seen that synthetic), 15w-50, and 10w-40. I figured the middle one would do.

Kinja'd!!!

And asking what 924/944 owners use for oil is like ripping the tag off a mattress.

15W-50 s eems very common among the older/classic car communities, probably due to that being what was run back then?

Isn’t that the truth, all sorts of communities get so heated when you dare utter the words “what’s the best oil for X car”

Does the engine have flat tappet lifters (as opposed to roller lifters)? If so you may want to see what the Porsche forums say about a zinc or similar additive .

Generally, I like Mobil1 in the winter, Castrol in the summer. I have an 08 Acura TSX with solid lifters (roller)   so I find the Mobil1 helps with the initial clatter sound between startup and the first 5 mins.

You mean solid lifters? Yeah I’ve got that. And you must know very well the can of worms asking a Porsche forum about oil. I’ve done hours of late night research and consulting other Turbo owners, and this is my conclusion. Though an additive might not be too bad of a question to ask.

That’s my guess. My recent go-to has been Rotella T6 15w-40 diesel oil. Because apparently that’s a thing now, running diesel oil in gas cars. It’s also stupid cheap. But I wanted to try regular car oil for once in three years.

Do NOT add zinc!!

Mobil1 15W50 is SPECIFICALLY designed for solid lifter engines. Phosphorus is 1200ppm and zinc is 1300ppm.

5W30 Extended Performance is 800 and 900 by comparison. 1200ppm and 1300ppm is VERY  high content. The only oils with higher content are Mobil1 V-Twin and Mobil1 Racing.

I have been using mobile 1 on all my cars for 10 years and I think it’s pretty good stuff. I also buy it at Walmart usually for around $22/5 qts.

I usually see more like 20w-50; 15-50 is quite a spread.

Mobil 1 can go 5,000 miles in my Subarus  without burning off.  Other things I’ve tried don’t make it without needing topped up.

Actually, this goes under the Engine Builder bucket more than the Porsche bucket.

As to where to find that information? Why, the Mobil1 specification page . Which i s... not really easy to find.

https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us/pvl/files/pdfs/mobil-1-oil-product-specs-guide.pdf

They list the viscosity, phosphorus, zinc, description, recommended applications, and approvals on this sheet. Now the question is... how do we compare it? That... is a lot harder.

For example, let’s go to Liqui Moly who makes a 15W50 as well. So after you go through a dozen drop-downs to get a list of four options. We’ll go with the boring black one.

https://products.liqui-moly.com/oils/super-low-friction-motor-oil-mos2-15w-50-1.html

Now you have to go pawing through the page which takes you to ‘Product information’ which.. doesn’t fucking tell you . So, unless you want to call Germany with a translator and hope they don’t just say “NEIN! IT IZ A TRADE ZECRET!!” that rules out Liqui Moly.

Ah! But Pennzoil! They’re a solid American(ish) company! And they have a 15W50 ... oh. It’s not sold in the US. Ah, but Red Line sells a 15W50! Which... they don’t disclose the phosphorus or zinc content in. Royal Purple will tell us, right? ... no. Castrol has a 15W... oh, also not sold in the US. Only Australia.

So there you have it. Three choices in a 15W50, and only one of them tells you how much zinc it has in it.

Mobil 1 full synthetic Euro formula or Amsoil full synthetic Euro formula is all I used when I had a Saab 9-3 turbo.

The main benefit of synthetic oils is they handle high temps better

My Clown Shoe uses 10w-60. For quite a while, you could get the BMW labeled  Castrol and that was pretty much it . Nowadays I use Liqui -Moly but there are several other brands offered. I still can’t find it at my local parts store though, so I order from BavAuto, and they’re big on Liqui- Moly

some say the rotella due to the higher zinc content which benefits older cars. In newer cars the higher zinc can mess with 02 sensor s and cat converters.

However some oil freaks say rotella has adjusted their formula to last longer in new engines and may not be best for older cars.

If you’re local, I’m actually not a jerk , but you have to provide the lift and air supply.

Otherwise, you have to buy one of my creations ($$$$$) or pay the price ($$$$$.)

I’ve been running European formula in the GTI mostly, Only comes in 0-40 around here, also  only flavor that seems to have VW certification. Manual calls for 5-20 or 5-30 I forgot which.

Porsche has a 10w-60 they offer through their classic line. But it seems more geared towards air cooled cars.

Researching oil and it’s science might become a pass time between classes and work now. Holy crap I find this all fascinating! I wonder why some brands don’t/are not willing to disclose this information?

The only other brand that comes to mind is Motul or something like that.

I used Mobil 1 once, because it’s what had been put in our Stratus since it was new ( had 12k miles when we got it ) . Couldn’t even make 1500 miles without going black/burnt.

This led to a lot of searching/testing oils as we all know how picky the 2.7L is. So I started a “testing” regimen.

Run each oil 3 oil changes, at 1500 mile intervals.

Oils that were black/burnt smelling after 1500 miles: Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Mobil 1.

Valvoline Synpower, Shell Rotella T6 were the only oils I tried that could make the 1500 miles without worry. Ended up using the Valvoline Synpower and doing oil changes every 3k miles. The motor was still as happy at 284k miles as it was when it was new.

Because they consider it a “trade secret” for one reason or another. Yes, it is absolutely 100% stupid and pointless . But they still do it. When literally any competent lab in the country can take a sample, look at it, and say “right so it’s X ppm of zinc, Y ppm of phosphorus , and 15ppm of goat’s milk.”

And Motul doesn’t tell you either.
